Book Checkout
Students checkout book during Media Class Week or Flexible Schedule Week with classroom teacher permission. Books are electronically checked for 14 days. Students may return books daily with passes provided by the classroom teacher. Each student is encouraged to choose one AR book and one free choice.
Student Withdrawals
When a pupil is planning to withdraw from school, they must return any library books which are checked out in their name and are expected to follow the policies for lost library books.
Attention Parents
We totally support the right for all students to utilize the WMES media resources. However, any parent who does not wish for their child to check out library books must send a written notice to the Media Specialist stating this request. It will be assumed all students have permission to check out library books if no notice is received.
Overdue Notices via Tuesday Communication Folder
The classroom teacher is sent a overdue memo for those students who have overdue books. This weekly memo is to be sent home with the Tuesday communication folder. There are no fines charged for overdue books.
Lost Books
As stated in the Scholl Board of Broward County, Florida MEDIA CENTER HANDBOOK Section B Article B-4:
"Students are expected to pay for lost items. The established county practice is for all libraries to charge the price for replacement of the lost items. If the lost material is later returned, the total amount paid is refunded." The refund can be made during that school year in which monies were paid. All lost books are to be replaced, paid for, or worked off before 1st week in June to avoid missing the end of the year school dance.
Optional Payment for Lost Books
Replacement
It is acceptable at Wilton Manors Elementary to replace the lost item with same title of the lost item that has exact edition , size, and quality condition. We prefer the lost book to be returned, a new book exactly the same edition or the money to purchase a book replacement.
Hardship Cases
To accommodate hardship cases and allow the student dignity of their fulfillment of responsibility, the students will "work off" the monies owed on lost books. Using the formula of the rounded off minimum wage at that current time ( approx. $5.00 / per hour at present) the amount of time for "work off payment " is calculated. For example book is worth $15.00, student is expected to work for 3 hours.
5th Grade Students:
Library Advisory Committee
A Library Advisory Committee meets throughout the year addressing concerns, county updates, library policies. Members of the committee include all those on the WMES Design Team. Meetings are held in the WMES training room usually the 2nd Tuesday of the month. A current schedule is available at the school office and all who are interested in attending are welcome. Pick up your visitors pass before coming to the meeting.
